However, Microsoft's AI efforts have not been without controversy. The company's Phi models, designed for performance and minimal cost usage, have been met with a privacy backlash associated with Windows Recall. The flop of Copilot+ PCs has also raised concerns among some shareholders.
In a bid to power the future with Azure, Microsoft may be content to operate behind the scenes rather than being in the spotlight. To support this ambition, the company is investing in AI-focused data centers for Azure. This investment, however, has come at a cost, with Microsoft laying off over 15,000 employees to fund this endeavour.
Microsoft's Phi models, prioritising performance, are not currently listed on TrackingAI, raising questions about their market readiness. The head of AI research at Microsoft, Mustafa Suleyman, is focusing on the development of more cost-effective intelligent models.
Meanwhile, Microsoft's competitors are also making waves in the AI sector. Meta is reportedly offering bonuses to poach OpenAI researchers, while OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini continue to dominate the AI conversation. In recent tests, OpenAI o3 Pro outperformed Microsoft Copilot, scoring higher in both online and offline tests. Elon Musk's Grok-4, another AI contender, also scored higher than Microsoft Copilot in the Mensa Norway test.
Despite these challenges, Microsoft remains committed to its AI strategy, aiming to provide cost-effective and efficient AI solutions for its users. Whether this approach will be enough to compete with the industry leaders remains to be seen.
