Competing Giants cornerbacks Cor'Dale Flott and Deonte Banks are in a fierce battle for the final starting position
The New York Giants' secondary is shaping up to be an intriguing battle as the regular season approaches. Cor'Dale Flott and Deonte Banks are in a fierce competition to start opposite Paulson Adebo at cornerback.
Both Flott and Banks have been making waves during OTAs and training camp, showcasing their skills and competing for the coveted spot. Flott, in particular, had his best preseason performance "by far", while Banks has been working hard to overcome the setbacks he faced last season.
Last summer, the Giants recognized that their plan to start Banks and Flott as bargain players was unsuccessful, leading them to add Adoree' Jackson to the roster. However, the duo has proven their worth since then, with Flott expressing confidence in his performance and team chemistry.
Banks, on the other hand, has been tested by defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson, who challenged him to improve after high-profile missed tackles. Unfortunately, Henderson ultimately lost his job, but Banks has been working diligently to prove his worth.
The Giants listed both Flott and Banks as starters on this week's unofficial depth chart, but defensive coordinator Shane Bowen mentioned the possibility of rotating them by series against the Washington Commanders. This approach could be strategic, as the NFL is a matchup league, and players are placed in favorable positions each week.
If Banks and Flott maintain their current form, they could face some challenging matchups. For instance, if Adebo faces Terry McLaurin, the other starter could find himself going up against Deebo Samuel in his first game with the Commanders. Adebo describes Samuel as fast, able to run away from defenders, and strong after the catch, making for a formidable opponent.
Banks was not available for an interview on Thursday, but it's clear that the Giants are testing his maturity by offering no handouts and challenging him to win the job over Flott. This competition is a testament to the team's commitment to finding the best players for each position, and it promises to add an exciting dynamic to the Giants' defense in the upcoming season.
