In a significant turn of events, Argentina's legislature has overturned a veto by President Javier Milei on a law aimed at bolstering healthcare benefits for people with disabilities. This marks the first time such an action has been taken since Milei took office in December 2023.

The overturned veto comes at a crucial time, with a ballot for national lawmakers scheduled for next month and for senators in the opposition-controlled province of Buenos Aires set for next week. The Senate passed a measure cancelling the president's veto with 63 votes to seven.

The disability law, if implemented, would cost between 0.22 percent and 0.42 percent of Argentina's GDP. It includes provisions for people with disabilities to receive a pension and reinstates a state hiring quota.

Trinidad Freiberg, a 23-year-old music therapist for children with disabilities, expressed her joy over the overturned veto. Hundreds of people gathered outside Congress to celebrate Thursday's decision.

However, the reversal of the veto occurs amidst a bribery scandal in the National Disability Agency that allegedly implicates the president's sister and right-hand woman, Karina Milei. Milei has indicated that if his veto were overturned, he would take the matter to court.

This development is a significant step forward for people with disabilities in Argentina, who have been waiting for the implementation of this law since its approval by Congress in July. The law aims to improve their quality of life by enhancing healthcare benefits and providing them with more opportunities in the job market.
