Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is facing scrutiny over her tax affairs and residency arrangements, with Conservative chairman Kevin Hollinrake requesting an investigation from the independent adviser on ministerial standards, Sir Laurie Magnus.

The controversy stems from allegations that Ms Rayner avoided £40,000 in stamp duty on a second home in East Sussex by removing her name from the deeds of another property in Greater Manchester. The Daily Telegraph reported this information, raising questions about the minister's tax practices.

However, it's important to note that Ms Rayner's spokesperson has denied any suggestion that she did not pay her stamp duty correctly. The spokesperson also stated that she paid the correct stamp duty on her second home in East Sussex.

As housing secretary, Ms Rayner is responsible for overseeing council tax and housing policy. Yet, the newspaper also claimed that Ms Rayner previously suggested the Greater Manchester home remained her primary residence, which could have saved her around £2,000 in council tax on her grace and favor home in central London.

In his letter to Sir Laurie, Mr Hollinrake described Ms Rayner's arrangements as "hypocritical tax avoidance, by a minister who supports higher taxes on family homes, high-value homes, and second homes."

Despite the controversy, the government has confirmed that Ms Rayner has followed advice on the allocation of her official residence at all times. The Cabinet Office spokesman made this statement, clarifying that there is no preparation for a summer of riots, as some speculated.

On a separate note, Unite, a trade union, has voted to suspend Angela Rayner over the Birmingham bin strike. However, this issue does not seem to be related to the tax and residency matters under investigation.

As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen whether Ms Rayner will face any consequences for her tax and residency arrangements. The public and political reactions to this matter are ongoing.
