Construction difficulties result in town hall schedule pushback

The preparations for the occupancy of Munich's new City Hall are progressing as planned, with the digitisation of administrative processes, the introduction of the e-file, and the organisational and technical equipment of the new work environment all on schedule.

However, a delay in the project has been announced, pushing the occupancy date from December 1, 2025, to mid-September 2026. This delay is attributed to unforeseen construction challenges during the renovation work, including structural and technical issues that require additional measures.

The delay is also linked to the municipality's own utility company, Stadtwerke MΓΌnchen (SWM), which caused traffic disruptions and halted active work on the construction site after initial excavation works. No specific private landlord or external company causing the delay is mentioned in the available documents.

Despite the delay, progress is being made on the construction site, with preparations for new wall installations in the building having begun. The change of ownership during the project phase has also contributed to the time shifts.

The progress report, due to be submitted to political bodies in the fourth quarter of 2025, aims to present the project progress, contextualise the reasons for the delay, and explain the next steps.

Mayor Frank Stein remains committed to creating a modern, digital, and citizen-friendly administrative centre with the New City Hall. He looks forward to the perspective and development the project will bring to the city.

The report will provide a comprehensive overview of the project, offering transparency and assurance that the project is moving forward, albeit with some unexpected setbacks. The delay is a temporary setback, but the city is determined to deliver a state-of-the-art administrative centre for its citizens.
