Construction obstacles have brought about a shift in the town hall's schedule, causing delays.
In a recent announcement, Mayor Frank Stein acknowledged the delay in the handover of the new City Hall, originally scheduled for December 1, 2025. The new date is now set for mid-September 2026.
The main reason for the delay, as explained by Mayor Stein, is the need for further planning due to unforeseen developments that are common in projects of such scale and complexity. Melissa Kemmerling, the project management lead for the New City Hall, assured that the city's preparations for future occupancy are proceeding as planned.
Static and technical issues were revealed after gutting the existing building, necessitating additional construction measures. Coordination and handoffs between project partners were more complex than initially expected, adding to the time shifts.
The delay is also attributed to the change of ownership during the project phase.
Despite the setbacks, Mayor Stein remains committed to creating a modern, digital, and citizen-friendly administrative hub with the New City Hall. The digitalization of administrative processes, the introduction of the e-file, and the organizational and technical equipment of the new workspace are part of the city's preparations.
Preparations for the new wall positions in the building have recently begun on the construction site. A comprehensive progress report will be presented to the political bodies in the fourth quarter of 2025, aiming to transparently present the project progress, contextualize the reasons for the delay, and explain the next steps.
It is worth noting that the search results do not provide information about the landlord of the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) responsible for the renovation work and the postponement of the building's handover to September 2026.
Mayor Stein emphasized that while the delay is disappointing, the perspective and development this project will bring to the city is eagerly anticipated. He encourages the city's residents to remain patient as the city works diligently to overcome the challenges and deliver a state-of-the-art City Hall.
