Construction of Murrtal viaduct in Backnang progresses
The State Government of Stuttgart is making significant strides in improving the traffic situation in and around Backnang with a mammoth project aimed at enhancing safety and reducing congestion for citizens and commuters. The heart of this endeavour is the expansion of Federal Highway (B) 14, specifically the Murrtal Viaduct.
The Murrtal Viaduct, divided into nine construction phases, is a central part of the new and expanded B 14 between Nellmersbach and Backnang-West. The eastern Murrtal Viaduct is nearing completion, with the bridge structure expected to be finished by the end of 2025. This milestone is anticipated by the end of this year.
Minister of Transport Winfried Hermann has visited the construction site of the Murrtal Viaduct, emphasizing the quick succession of construction phases in the project. The responsible person for the expansion of the B 14 between Nellmersbach and Backnang-West, led by Minister Hermann, is Hermann Klyeisen, the deputy head of the mobility department in the State Government of Stuttgart.
The federal government is investing around 23.7 million euros in the new construction of the Murrtal Viaduct East. Once completed, the new infrastructure will bundle traffic on the bypass axis, creating more safety. It will also provide relief to local traffic in Backnang and the surrounding region.
The completion of the Murrtal Viaduct will be followed by the installation of a noise barrier, expected in spring 2026. After the installation of bridge equipment, traffic will be switched to the new structure several times for different construction phases in the connecting sections, expected in mid-2026.
Three construction phases - up to Waldrems, the Backnang-Mitte interchange, and the Murrtal Viaduct West side - have already been completed. The eastern Murrtal Viaduct is the latest achievement, with the western viaduct expected to complement it in the future.
Planning for the Backnang-South interchange is underway, with construction expected to begin as early as summer 2027. The goal is to tangibly relieve towns along the B 14 route from through-traffic and reduce accident risks. The entire stretch between Nellmersbach and Backnang-West is expected to be four-lane by 2030.
For any enquiries or updates regarding this major project, the Ministry of Transport can be contacted via their Press Office or Citizens' Representative. The four-lane expansion of B 14 aims to significantly reduce noise and exhaust emissions in the Stuttgart/Rems-Murr economic region, contributing to a cleaner and safer environment for all.
