Construction of the bridge for Gartenfeld's massive project will commence over the shipping channel in the year 2025.

In a significant move for the city of Berlin, construction on the "New Garden Field" project, which aims to expand the city to the west and accommodate up to 10,000 residents, has commenced. The state-owned housing company GEWOBAG is leading the charge, building 1,200 apartments on the Insel Gartenfeld island.

The residential construction project originally planned by the housing cooperative begeno16 eG on the island has been sold to the planning community OIB/GEWOBAG. Another state-owned housing company, HOWOGE, will also contribute to the project by constructing a community school on the island for 1,300 students.

A key connection in the project will be a new bridge, designed for public transport, cycling, and pedestrian traffic. This bridge, planned to be built at Rhenaniastraße in the southwestern part of the area, will also accommodate a new tram line and a cycle expressway. Construction of the new bridge is set to begin in 2025 and take two years to complete.

During construction, motor vehicle and bus traffic will be disrupted, and bus lines 139 and N39 may need to be temporarily rerouted. The exact timeline for the streetcar connecting to the Insel Gartenfeld remains unclear, but it is planned to be completed by 2027.

The school construction project is an important part of Berlin's school construction offensive and a prerequisite for the upcoming residential development on the Insel Gartenfeld. The school concept includes the integration of a combined site, which will network with publicly used sports facilities and the surroundings.

The new community school on the Insel Gartenfeld is designed as an important meeting place due to its strong opening towards the city quarter. Access to Bootshausweg for residents will remain largely ensured during construction.

A new bridge over the Old Berlin-Spandau Canal is also planned as part of the connection to the western Berlin area. The bridge's design favors a single-span trough bridge with two arched main supports, with a total width of 19.60 meters and a clear span of 46.31 meters. The construction of this bridge will take into account ecological aspects due to its location in a nature reserve.

The Senate has pushed ahead with the project, with construction set to begin this year, although there are delays due to the need to run important city cables under the ramp. The Garden Field island in Berlin-Spandau is undergoing comprehensive urban development, with plans for up to 3,700 residential units, commercial spaces, and infrastructure facilities.

The bridge connecting Rhenaniastraße to the island will remain exclusively used by BVG traffic and will not be opened to car traffic. The school, the residential units, the new bridge, and the cycle expressway are all part of Berlin's ambitious plans to expand and modernise its urban infrastructure.
