Construction preparations for the school building at DBG
In the heart of Bergisch Gladbach, construction work has commenced on an innovative interim classroom building for the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Gymnasium (DBG). This project, a collaboration between the city administration and municipal subsidiary SBGL, is set to provide urgently needed school space for up to 15 years.
The construction, which began on August 12, 2025, at the Jan Wellem sports club, is an excellent example of successful cooperation. SBGL, the construction company responsible for the project, has thanked all involved parties, including the city administration, political decision-makers, and the Jan Wellem sports club, for their constructive cooperation and trust in the timely implementation of the project.
The interim classroom building will be entirely wooden, with only the foundations made of concrete. This choice not only looks good but also ensures a modern and timely implementation, while reducing noise pollution compared to conventional construction methods. The main building components will be prefabricated and delivered, allowing the building to be erected in a few weeks.
The project continues to rely on regional construction companies for its successful implementation. The increased truck traffic and temporary traffic disruptions during delivery phases have been anticipated, and the city administration has asked for understanding in advance.
Schulbau GmbH (SBGL), the construction company responsible for building the interim classroom building, has stated that the goal is to build a fully functional, modern building in a very short time. The project's wooden construction ensures this ambition can be met, relying on serial modular construction, which has proven successful in other city projects.
Mayor Frank Stein has emphasised that this is an excellent example of successful cooperation between administration and the municipal subsidiary. Alexandra Meuthen, head of the building management department of the city of Bergisch Gladbach, commented that the project signifies an important step for the future of the schools.
Construction work involves the removal of individual trees from the edge of the property as part of the preparatory measures. SBGL has thanked the city administration for contacting the adjacent sports club to find a suitable site for the construction.
For inquiries, Sebastian Rolko, managing director of SBGL, can be contacted at 02202 / 9797920. The modular wooden building is scheduled to be ready for occupancy by the start of the new school year in summer 2026. The project will be compensated by replanting, ensuring the continuation of the city's green spaces.
