Construction work along I-81 in Syracuse will result in slowdowns until early October.
In the city of Syracuse, New York, drivers are advised to exercise caution and expect delays on Interstate 81 (I-81) and Interstate 481 (I-481) due to ongoing construction projects.
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is responsible for the I-81 Viaduct Project, which is currently underway in the city. This construction project on the I-81 viaduct is causing periodic rolling slowdowns, and traffic-control signs and flaggers should be followed in work zones.
On I-481 south, near Exit 1, flaggers will be stationed on East Brighton and East Glen avenues to manage traffic. Traffic on I-481 south between the roundabouts will be stopped while construction is taking place. Drivers should expect delays in this area due to the construction.
The construction-related delays will occur weekdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., starting from Thursday and continuing through early October. The slowdowns will last approximately 5 to 10 minutes on I-81 north and south between Exit 17 and Exit 78.
Under New York's Work Zone Safety Act, two or more convictions for speeding in a work zone can lead to a driver's license suspension. Fines for speeding in work zones are doubled in New York. Drivers are urged to comply with these regulations to ensure the safety of workers and other drivers.
Meanwhile, in other news, a Syracuse man has been sentenced to prison for killing a woman by stabbing her 38 times. More charges have been filed against another Syracuse man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend.
Elsewhere in central New York, a man has been accused of killing his prison cellmate. Another man has been sentenced for taking over $21,000 in pension checks issued to his dead mother.
In a separate incident, a driver fleeing police in Monroe County crashed a U-Haul into a canal, resulting in a passenger's drowning.
As always, it's important to remember to drive safely and follow traffic regulations, especially in work zones. Stay informed about construction updates and plan your routes accordingly to avoid delays and ensure a safe journey.
