Consultation by the Commission on the proposed legislation.
The reform of the Bavarian Hunting Law, which has been a topic of heated discussions for several months, seems to be nearing its final stage. The agreement, as reported by the German Press Agency, is based on coalition circles' statements.
Prior to this, the responsibility for hunting was under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, with Agriculture Minister Michaela Kaniber. However, since the end of 2023, the responsibility has shifted to the Bavarian State Ministry of Economics, led by Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger.
The reform includes provisions for the wolf, deer hunting seasons, shooting plans, and now also the administrative shooting plan for roe deer. The administrative shooting plan has been a point of contention in the coalition and between associations. The details about this plan may be provided during the press conference following the cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
The shooting plans specify how much roe deer must be shot to protect forests from wild browsing. The reform also includes provisions related to the administrative shooting plan for roe deer, a significant step towards resolving the long-standing dispute.
Minister Michaela Kaniber insists that the wolf cull should be legally clarified at the federal level. A fundamental agreement has been reached in the dispute over the inclusion of the wolf in the state hunting law.
CSU and Free Voters, including Kaniber and Aiwanger, have been at the heart of these discussions. The press conference following the cabinet meeting on Tuesday will likely provide more details about the agreed changes to the Bavarian Hunting Law, including the roe deer-related provisions.
The State Chancellery has sent out an invitation for this press conference, where Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters) and Agriculture Minister Michaela Kaniber (CSU) are expected to attend. The conference promises to shed light on the much-anticipated reform of the Bavarian Hunting Law.
