Contests the decisions of Benfica, Luís Filipe Vieira proposes new voting regulations

In a significant turn of events, Luis Filipe Vieira's campaign has released an alternative electoral regulation for Benfica's upcoming elections, scheduled for October 25. This proposal comes in response to the regulation published by Benfica last Thursday.

The universality of the vote is guaranteed under this new regulation, with distance voting having the same dignity and guarantee as in-person voting. This is a response to concerns about inadmissible possibilities of distortion in the preparation and consolidation of electoral rolls.

Luis Filipe Vieira, the former Benfica president who is running for the same role, has criticised the current leader, Rui Costa, regarding the document. He emphasises that the electoral process should not be organised by the incumbent against the other candidates.

The alternative regulation also emphasises the importance of transparency in the electoral process. Publicity and transparency are emphasised and inscribed in the electoral roll, which is duly publicised in advance.

The remuneration commission ceases to be subordinate to the Direction, restoring the fulfilment of the statutes. This is a significant change from the current setup, and it is hoped that it will ensure a fair and impartial electoral process.

In addition, the alternative regulation allows for members to be delegated, a possibility that was inexplicably denied before. This will enable more members to participate in the electoral process.

A certifying entity is welcome under the new regulation, but it must carry out a preventive audit of the electoral system with the participation of all candidacies and be subject to duties of impartiality and responsibility. This will ensure equal access to its services for all candidates.

Besides Luis Filipe Vieira, Rui Costa, João Noronha Lopes, João Diogo Manteigas, Cristovao Carvalho, and Martim Mayer are also running for Benfica's presidency. João Noronha Lopes has expressed views on the electronic voting system in relation to the electoral regulation, while João Diogo Manteigas has criticised BTV for waiting for regulations derived from the electoral regulation to organise a debate among all candidates.

In the coming weeks, Desporto ao Minuto will embark on a round of interviews with the candidates for the presidency of Benfica, subject to their availability. This will provide an opportunity for the candidates to discuss their views and proposals in more detail.

The announcement was made on Monday and implies a decision to reject the initial regulation in the General Assembly meeting on September 27. The person who proposed the Alternative Election Rules for the Benfica elections is not publicly specified at this time.
