Controversy over support for Palestinian demonstrations

In a surprising turn of events during the 11th stage of the Vuelta 2025, the race was disrupted by Palestinian protests. The Israel Premier Tech team, who were specifically targeted by the demonstrators, faced disruptions that led to the neutralization of the stage results three kilometers before the finish line in Bilbao.

The UCI (cycling world governing body) and the organizers of the Vuelta have strongly condemned the protests, reaffirming the importance of political neutrality in sports organizations and the unifying role of sport. The UCI expressed that sport, including cycling, should never be used as a means of punishment.

The organizers prioritized the safety of the riders during the disrupted stage. The race was briefly stopped in the neutral zone before police could clear the road, and four police officers were reportedly injured during the incidents. The behavior of the protesters was considered dangerous and counterproductive to their cause by the Israel-Premier Tech team, who announced they would continue participating in the Spain Tour after the disruption on the 11th stage.

Spanish media reported three arrests during the protests. The team stated that any other course of action would send a dangerous signal to other teams. No new information regarding the safety measures taken during the disrupted stage was provided.

The Vuelta organizers have stated they will continue to work closely with the authorities on the remaining stages of the Spain Tour. They respect peaceful protests but cannot tolerate actions that endanger the physical safety of participants or race caravan members. The cyclists rode slowly towards the finish in Bilbao after reaching the three-kilometer mark.

The race jury neutralized the 11th stage three kilometers from the finish line due to the presence of numerous protesters. There was a tense situation during the first pass, with security forces barely able to prevent protesters from entering the course.

The organizers and the UCI have reiterated their commitment to ensuring a safe and fair competition for all teams involved in the Vuelta 2025. The Israel Premier Tech team, despite the disruptions, continues to compete in the race, demonstrating their resilience and commitment to the sport.
