Convict in Calgary receives sentence for sexual abuse against woman with intellectual impairments

In a Calgary court, Logan Vegh was sentenced to four-and-a-half years for sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman with an intellectual disability equivalent to an 11-year-old child. The assaults occurred over a four-year period, with three separate incidents identified.

Vegh, who had been A.J.'s unofficial caregiver since August 2022, officially became her caregiver in September 2022. During his police interview, Vegh stated that he was a friend of A.J.'s sister and had come to help A.J.'s mother, who was the primary caregiver in 2019.

Justice M.T.C. Tyndale included an agreed statement of facts in the court decision. Tyndale described the offences as extremely grave, involving the repeated major sexual assault of an extremely vulnerable adult. He stated that Vegh took advantage of A.J.'s disability in committing the crimes.

A.J.'s medical records indicate that she functioned at a Grade 5 level. The degree of her developmental and intellectual disability was well known to Vegh. Despite this, Vegh claimed to be aware of his boundaries with A.J., but admitted that she had a crush on him. A.J. told investigators that she did not consent to any sexual activity with Vegh and felt grossed out.

Tyndale further stated that given A.J.'s condition, she did not have the capacity to consent. The Crown characterized A.J.'s victim impact statement as having a child-like manner.

In addition to his sentence, Vegh was ordered to submit a DNA sample for Canada's DNA database. He was also handed a prohibition from owning any firearms, ammunition or explosives for 10 years following his release.

It is important to note that the available search results do not contain information on the name of the perpetrator who sexually harassed a 21-year-old man with the intellectual development of an 11-year-old child in Calgary in 2019, nor the date when he officially became his caregiver. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable adults and ensuring that those who exploit their vulnerability are held accountable.
