Convict Turned Rhymesayer: Reginald Dwayne Betts

Renowned poet and former adult prison inmate Reginald Dwayne Betts was the latest guest to grace the Prior Performing Arts Center at the College of the Holy Cross. The event, held on February 26, 2023, saw Betts captivate the audience with his thought-provoking poetry and personal stories, focusing on themes of incarceration, redemption, and the life of the mind.

Betts, who has received numerous accolades including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2018 and a MacArthur Fellowship in 2021, is no stranger to the intersection of art and social justice, particularly in the criminal justice system. His eight-year stint in prison has shaped his lifelong advocacy for these causes.

During his talk, Betts read poems from his collection that resonated deeply with those in attendance. Kieran Corcoran '24, a student in attendance, found the event enjoyable and noted that Betts deviated from his original script during his presentation, adding a personal touch that made the poetry even more impactful.

Betts' casual yet sincere tone, often punctuated with light profanity to alleviate tension, engaged the audience and made for an intimate atmosphere. The event was well-received, with George Caldwell '24, the News Editor, and Jake Ruderman '26, the Sports Editor, both expressing their appreciation for Betts' visit.

In addition to his work as a poet, Betts is also the founder of "Freedom Reads," an organisation that empowers individuals through literature to confront the effects of incarceration on the spirit. He is also supported by The Justice Arts Coalition in his efforts towards prison reform.

The Prior Performing Arts Center has hosted several notable events this semester, further cementing its reputation as a hub for thought-provoking discussions and artistic performances. As the MLB enters a competitive stretch with around 20 games left in the season, the College of the Holy Cross continues to provide a platform for meaningful conversations, both on and off the field.
