Convicted former pilot admits guilt for attempting to sabotage aircraft mid-flight under the influence of psilocybin, a compound found in magic mushrooms
In a dramatic court hearing, former commercial airline pilot Joseph Emerson has been convicted for attempting to shut off the engines of a passenger plane mid-flight in October 2023. The incident occurred on a Horizon Airlines flight above Oregon.
Emerson, who was in a cockpit jump seat and not piloting the plane, reached up and grabbed the red fire suppression handles, which would have cut off fuel to the engines. Thankfully, the quick actions of the pilot and co-pilot, who stopped Emerson and diverted the plane to Portland, prevented any catastrophe.
During the hearing, Emerson stated that he had no intention of harming anyone, but takes responsibility for his actions. However, Multnomah County, Oregon, Deputy District Attorney Eric Pickard described Emerson's actions as reckless, selfish, and criminal.
In Oregon state court, Emerson pleaded no contest to reckless endangerment and first-degree endangering an aircraft. He was sentenced to 50 days in jail (already served), five years' probation, 664 hours of community service, and $60,569 in restitution. In federal court, Emerson pleaded guilty to one count of interference with flight crew members and attendants. The federal charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and sentencing in the federal case is set for November 17.
The plane carried 84 people, including Emerson, with eleven of the passengers being children under the age of 14. During the flight, Emerson said, "I'm not OK." Emerson has admitted to taking the hallucinogen psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms, before the incident, which was his first time using the drug.
Emerson has struggled with depression, and he stated that he took the drug in an attempt to self-medicate. However, his actions have resulted in serious consequences. Emerson is sober and in recovery, and he expressed remorse for his actions during the court hearings.
The exact trial date for Emerson has not been publicly disclosed. However, the public is reminded of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for proper treatment and support for those struggling with depression and other mental health issues. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potentially devastating consequences of untreated mental health issues and the importance of seeking help.
