Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) sold the fastest in August 2025, with an average of 56 days and 56.4 days respectively. Diesel models took slightly longer to sell, at 58.8 days, followed by petrol cars at 59.5 days, and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) at 61.5 days.
In the used-car market, Spain and Germany were the only countries to avoid Residual Value (RV) declines. Spain experienced stagnation at 0%, while Germany saw a slight growth of 0.1%. On the other hand, Italy, Switzerland, and the UK saw a decline in RVs. France, however, experienced a slight fall in RVs due to higher list prices and lower absolute trade rates.
Across all observed markets, year on year, %RVs fell, with the largest decline in Switzerland at 5pp. Contrastingly, transactions in the used-car market in Spain increased by 5.8% in July and 5.2% in the year to date.
The Hyundai Tucson was the fastest-selling model across the entire used-car market in France, as well as within the diesel and HEV categories. Tesla had the two fastest-selling used BEVs in France with the Model Y and Model 3.
In terms of powertrain, petrol cars led the market with a %RV of 49.9%. Then came diesel cars at 49.3% and HEVs at 48.9%, followed by PHEVs at 43.3%. BEVs retained the lowest level of value at 37%.
Austria saw a slight decline in RVs, with the sales-volume index (SVI) rising by 7.2% compared to July but recording a 2.6% year-on-year decline. Germany, on the other hand, saw stability in RVs, with a significant increase in used-car demand in August.
Looking ahead, Autovista Group editors expect the residual values in Austria, France, Germany, Switzerland, and the UK to stabilize or show slight increases in 2026 and 2027, reflecting recovering market conditions and improved economic outlooks.
In summary, the European used car market saw mixed results in August 2025, with some countries experiencing declines in RVs and others seeing growth. The fastest-selling vehicles were PHEVs and HEVs, while BEVs took the longest to sell. The market is expected to stabilize or improve in the coming years.
