Is comet 3I/Borisov, in reality, an undiscovered alien spacecraft? - Could the comet 3I/Atlas be secretly a covert space vehicle?
In the vast expanse of our universe, a new interstellar visitor has graced our solar system. Comet 3I/ATLAS, discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Chile in July 2025, is only the third known interstellar object to traverse our solar system.
This fast-moving celestial body, several kilometers in size, is currently on a trajectory that will bring it close to the Sun. As it approaches the Sun, its water ice will begin to evaporate, making its tail longer and easier to see. The comet has a distinctive dust cloud around an ice-blue light circle, setting it apart from the common comets we are accustomed to.
Comet 3I/ATLAS consists of different types of ice, such as water, carbon dioxide, and frozen carbon monoxide. Models suggest that it is very old and likely comes from the distant disk of our galaxy. As it passes the Sun in late October, it will continue its journey, returning to the stars.
Multiple powerful telescopes, including NASA's Hubble, SPHEREx, TESS, and the James Webb Space Telescope, are involved in studying its composition to gain insights into the chemistry of distant star systems. This international scientific effort includes observing institutions worldwide, with particular emphasis on the initial discovery by the Chilean ATLAS telescope and subsequent observations by several space telescopes.
While the majority of scientists in the scientific community view 3I/ATLAS as a natural interstellar object, some speculation suggests that it might be an alien spacecraft. Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb proposes this theory based on the comet's unusual trajectory and lack of a "classic" comet tail. However, it is important to note that this hypothesis is not yet confirmed.
Aster Taylor, a doctoral student in astrophysics at the University of Michigan, expects more time to observe 3I/ATLAS. Despite ongoing observations, the exact nature of the comet remains unclear. The previous interstellar objects discovered were 1I/ʻOumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019.
As we continue to study Comet 3I/ATLAS, we are not only deepening our understanding of the universe but also fueling the imagination of what lies beyond our solar system. The comet will continue moving inward for a few more months before turning around, leaving us with a captivating spectacle in its wake.
