Council postpones vote on Bally's proposal for casino in Bronx, New York City
Bally's Casino Expansion Plans in New York City Halted by Council Delay
New York City's plans to see Bally's develop a casino on part of the former Trump Golf Links site at Ferry Point in the Bronx have been temporarily shelved. The New York City Council, led by Speaker Adrienne Adams, chose to postpone a crucial discussion on the proposal, putting the project in an uncertain state.
In a significant setback for the project, the city council withheld the necessary "home rule" message. This message is essential for the state legislature body to consider a land-use bill for the project's progression. Without it, the entire venture cannot move forward.
Bally's obtained ownership of the golf course two years ago and renamed it Bally's Golf Links at Ferry Point. The scheme includes the development of a substantial gaming facility featuring a casino, hotel, event center, and retail space on a section of the site. However, the project has faced opposition and political tensions, partly due to concerns about indirect financial benefits to the Trump Organization if Bally's secures a casino license.
Ballyβs Chairman Soo Kim has criticized rival bidders for employing anti-Trump sentiment to contest support for the proposal, branding it a "whisper campaign." Without the council's approval, Bally's cannot proceed with its bid for one of the available state casino licenses.
The postponement of the New York City Council's discussion on the Bally's casino expansion plans has left the progression of the casino-and-gambling project in limbo, as the necessary "home rule" message remains withheld. Bally's ambitious project includes the development of casino-games within a comprehensive gaming facility, alongside a hotel, event center, and retail space.
