Couple divorced but still living together in Johor face potential imprisonment as their excuse for shared laundry proves false
Divorced Muslim Couple Arrested in Johor for Illicit Relationship
In a surprising turn of events, a recently divorced Muslim couple in Johor has been arrested for engaging in an illicit relationship. The arrest was carried out early this morning at the ex-wife's flat in Kempas by the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ).
According to reports, the couple, who have been living separately since their divorce about a year ago, have been seen visiting each other in full view of their neighbours. However, the enforcement officer revealed that JAINJ did not receive a confirmation from the couple if they were sleeping together throughout the visits.
The man, who has feelings for his ex-wife and they have decided to reconcile, gave the reason for being in the house as seeking help with laundry and to see his child. The wali who acts on behalf of the man's wife during the previous marriage agreement discussion is typically the woman's guardian or male relative authorized to represent her interests in the marriage contract.
However, the man's brother-in-law, who was previously a witness for his ex-wife, was not present during the visits. Due to the strained relationship, the man and his brother-in-law have not spoken to each other, and the man sought the advice of an enforcement officer who advised the couple to re-marry again.
The Kadi's office advised the man to go through the normal process, including finding a wali (witness), if he wants to re-marry his ex-wife. If convicted, the couple can face both a fine and imprisonment. The maximum fine they could face is up to RM3,000 each, while the maximum imprisonment is up to six years.
The arrest was due to public complaints about the pair's relationship. The couple's illicit relationship continued without marriage, raising concerns among the community. The couple's case serves as a reminder to all about the importance of following the proper religious and legal procedures when seeking reconciliation with an ex-spouse.
