Cracker Barrel and Steak 'n Shake Engage in Unusual Feud over Steak 'n Shake's Uninspired New Logo, Reports Update

On August 21, 2025, a heated exchange between two popular restaurant chains, Steak 'n Shake and Cracker Barrel, unfolded on social media platforms. The controversy began with Steak 'n Shake criticizing Cracker Barrel's recent logo change.

In a tweet, Gary Peterson expressed his disapproval of the new Cracker Barrel logo, stating that it was a step away from the brand's traditional values. This tweet was followed by Steak 'n Shake's own post, mocking Cracker Barrel's logo change in a folksy, playful manner. The post, read as if by a folksy announcer, referred to the removal of a man in overalls from Cracker Barrel's logo.

The post, intended to capitalize on a perceived "MAGA meltdown" over the new logo, did not mention that Sardar Biglari, the entrepreneur and investor known for founding Biglari Holdings and holding an active role in Cracker Barrel as the chairman, has attempted seven takeovers of the Cracker Barrel board since 2011.

Cracker Barrel did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the post. Sardar Biglari, who owns less than 10% of Cracker Barrel's stock according to Nation's Restaurant News, has been influential in the company's strategy.

The feud between the two chains did not go unnoticed, with Craig Lawrence and others criticizing Steak 'n Shake's perceived role as the "logo police". NewStart also joined the conversation, urging Steak 'n Shake to focus on improving their food instead of engaging in political debates.

The incident is reminiscent of Wendy's social media strategy, which has built a brand on mocking competitors. Meanwhile, some people on social media mocked Steak 'n Shake for updating its own logo, while others praised the chain for standing up for traditional American values.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how this logo feud will impact the reputation and customer base of both Steak 'n Shake and Cracker Barrel.

In related news, Steak 'n Shake's CEO, Sardar Biglari, has a history with Cracker Barrel, and the chain has been trying to appeal to the Trump White House and the "Make America Healthy Again" crowd recently. daikon (@ngmingmingmi) posted an updated version of a story on August 21, 2025, with background on Sardar Biglari's history with Cracker Barrel.
