Crafting Lux: An Inside Look

The Luxembourg Avenue project in Hürth-Hermülheim is making steady progress, with multiple government bodies contributing to its funding. The project is being supported by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building, the NRW Ministry of the Interior, Local Government, Building and Digitalization, the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM), and the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the state of NRW.

The project, which aims to make Luxembourg Street more attractive and livable, is currently in its second phase. Construction of open spaces, ancillary facilities, and a bike lane between Horbeller Street and Fritz-Räcke Street (west side) is underway. Road reconstruction is focusing on the section between Horbeller Street and the AOK Street.

The demolition work on the former AOK building started in early July 2025 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2026. The actual demolition work in the AOK building will start by early October. Hazardous material remediation in the AOK building is currently underway and expected to be completed by mid-September. The demolition of the AOK building will be carried out in sections, from front right to back left.

Main and supply lines, along with their connection lines, have been laid on the west side of Luxembourg Street between Horbeller Street and Fritz-Räcke Street. Work on the open spaces, sidewalks, and the new bike lane on the west side began in mid-July. The laying of the district heating lines has progressed to Severinus Street.

Occasionally, archaeological artifacts or potential ordnance have required minor adjustments to the construction schedule. Despite these minor setbacks, the project is overall on schedule and these adjustments have been successfully absorbed through restructuring.

Funding for the project also includes 171,600 euros from the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the state of NRW. Funding for the planned bike lane is provided by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport and the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) as project sponsor for the federal special program "City and Country". The total funding for the Luxembourg Avenue project is 7,971,413 euros.

As of now, the project leader of the Luxembourg Avenue project in Hürth-Hermülheim is not publicly specified in available information. The completion of the project is eagerly anticipated by the local community, as it promises to transform Luxembourg Street into a more vibrant and inviting space.
