Crafting Song Structure, Continued

======================================================================================================================

In our previous post, we discussed the building blocks of pop songs. Today, let's delve deeper into the structures that these songs take, using examples like 'Yesterday' by The Beatles, 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' by Kylie Minogue, and 'There She Goes' by The La's.

'Yesterday', a timeless classic, follows a simple yet effective structure of AABABA. Its straightforward form helps convey a strong lyrical message about regret, sadness, and heartbreak. On the other hand, 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' deviates from the traditional verse-chorus structure, adopting an intriguing ABABCDACDAA form. This structure works exceptionally well with dance tracks, keeping the energy high throughout the song.

'There She Goes' by The La's presents a unique structure, AABABABABCBABA, with alternating sung and instrumental sections. Despite its downbeat lyrical subject, the structure contributes to an exciting, up-tempo feel, making it a standout in the world of pop music.

Many pop songs follow variations of the verse-chorus approach, such as ABCABCDC. In this structure, verses tell the story, the pre-chorus or bridge introduces a hook, and the chorus delivers the big hook. However, not all songs adhere to this traditional format; 'The Fear' and 'There She Goes' are prime examples of this deviation.

'The Fear' has a more conventional structure, with an intro, verse 1, chorus 1, instrumental, verse 2, chorus 2, instrumental, verse 3, chorus 3, and outro. Another variation replaces the middle 8 with the pre-chorus, providing a fresh take on the classic structure.

Regardless of the structure, maintaining interest is crucial. Interesting lyrics, new musical elements, or a well-placed break can keep listeners engaged and prevent monotony. A good balance and introducing something new are key to keeping the listener interested.
