Daghestani individual coerced to issue video apology after children deface military portraits

In the heart of Makhachkala, the capital city of Daghestan, a recent incident has sparked controversy. A man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was compelled to publicly apologize after his children damaged portraits of soldiers displayed on commemorative billboards.

These billboards, a part of a regional campaign, feature photographs of participants in Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. They serve as a means to honour the fallen and demonstrate public support for the invasion. However, the incident in Makhachkala has stirred debate, with some viewing it as mere hooliganism and others, like Mayor Dzhambulat Salavov, deeming it a desecration and an act of vandalism.

The billboards and banners, regularly updated with portraits of residents of the region who took part in the fighting, have been a common sight in Makhachkala and other cities of Daghestan since the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. The region, with its rich history and diverse culture, is currently experiencing significant changes.

The damage to the photographs, caused by a ballpoint pen and crayons, has resulted in at least four portraits being marred. The father, in a video statement, asserted that there was no malicious intent, claiming it was just childish mischief. Despite this, the apology was published by the Telegram channel Criminal Chronicle, believed to be linked to law enforcement.

The incident comes at a time when the Caucasus region, including Daghestan, is among the Russian regions with the highest losses in the invasion. As reported by Mediazona and the BBC, at least 1,642 soldiers from Daghestan have been confirmed to have been killed in the war in Ukraine.

In response to these changes, a community of readers is building a newsroom to respond to the shifting landscape. The organization, Zentrum Liberale Moderne (Center for Liberal Modernity), aims to engage against increasing authoritarianism and run a news editorial office with readers.

However, the future of journalism in the region remains uncertain due to threats against independent voices. As the story unfolds, the community continues to strive for truth and transparency, seeking to navigate the complexities of the current political climate.

The damaged photographs will be replaced, marking a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made and the ongoing efforts to commemorate those who have fallen. As the city of Makhachkala and the region of Daghestan continue to grapple with the impact of the full-scale invasion, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict.
