The Dallas Mavericks have announced a significant move in their roster, as they have agreed to a four-year, $90 million contract extension with forward P.J. Washington. This deal keeps Washington under contract through the 2029-30 season, ensuring continuity for the Western Conference team.

Washington, who arrived in Dallas in February 2024 in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets, made an immediate impact in his first full season with the Mavericks. He averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks, while shooting 45.3% from the field and 38.1% from 3-point range.

Washington's versatility was a key factor in his success. His ability to stretch defenses and defend multiple positions gave Dallas valuable versatility. This versatility, combined with his solid statistics, makes him a key contributor for the Mavericks.

The extension comes at a time when the Mavericks are also investing in young talent. Besides Washington, the team signed Anthony Davis and the young guard Max Christie this summer as part of a trade deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, and they also acquired several draft picks. The Mavericks have also extended the contract of Max Christie.

The addition of rookie Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and the extension of guard Kyrie Irving and center Daniel Gafford earlier this summer, further strengthens the Mavericks' roster.

Flagg's presence may create questions about Washington's role in the forward rotation. However, Washington's ability to shift between power forward and small-ball center ensures he will remain a key contributor. His valuable depth and stability, especially considering the Mavericks' history of injuries, make him an essential piece of the team.

The Mavericks' roster, featuring Davis, Irving, Flagg, and Washington, is seen as capable of sustaining a championship push in the Western Conference. Under league rules, the new agreement makes Washington ineligible for a trade this season, providing stability for the team moving forward.

Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics and Joe Mazzulla have also agreed to a multi-year extension. This development, while not directly related to the Mavericks, highlights the ongoing movement in the NBA as teams look to solidify their rosters for the upcoming season.
