Dazzling Spotted Lake of Canada Bares an Alien-like Spectacle

Spotted Lake is renowned for its collection of puddle-like bodies of water that change colours based on the presence and concentration of minerals. Each summer, as temperatures rise, the water begins to evaporate, and minerals crystallize into walkways, leaving behind large puddles that dot the land. The large "puddles" sometimes are clear, and at other times they are yellow, green, or blue, though rarely as blue as the Potash evaporation ponds.

The lake is one of the most mineral-rich bodies of water in the world, containing more than ten minerals. Magnesium sulphate, sodium, and calcium are the most abundant, with small doses of titanium and silver not uncommon. This mineral-rich composition makes Spotted Lake a natural phenomenon that requires sight to fully appreciate.

For four decades, the Ernest Smith family owned Spotted Lake, attempting to turn the land into a spa. However, the Native Indians from the Okanagan Valley, known as the First Nations, have long recognized Spotted Lake (Kliluk) and its perceived healing powers. In recent years, the First Nations were able to purchase the land, preserving its natural state for future generations.

The Syilx/Okanagan people of the Okanagan Valley recognize Spotted Lake and its healing powers. They believe in its restorative properties and have incorporated it into their cultural practices. Tourists can only view Spotted Lake from afar, respecting its sacredness and the efforts to preserve its natural state.

Spotted Lake is often associated with various Aboriginal groups who are neither Inuit nor Métis.
