Death of Prisoner at Eastern Correctional Institute Under Scrutiny
The Maryland State Police are currently investigating the death of Donyell Cornell Morris, a 24-year-old inmate, who was pronounced dead at the Eastern Correctional Institute in Somerset County, Maryland, on August 31.
Preliminary findings suggest that Morris was in a cell with another inmate before being discovered unresponsive on his bunk by correctional officers. The identity of this inmate, as well as the suspect in the investigation, is being withheld pending further investigation.
The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was alerted to Morris's death at 5:40 p.m. on August 31 by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Intelligence and Investigative Division.
Another inmate, identified as Lashawn Stephens, has been identified as a suspect in the investigation. However, no charges have been filed, and it is not mentioned if any other inmates or staff members are suspected in the case.
Findings from the investigation will be submitted to the Somerset County State's Attorney's Office for review. It is not yet known where the investigation is being conducted.
