Decade-long backing for regional bus systems
In the heart of Germany, the state of Baden-Württemberg has taken a significant step towards sustainable and climate-friendly mobility with the introduction of the bwregiobuses. Launched by the Ministry of Transport in 2015, the Regiobus Lines funding program has since expanded, now boasting 51 operational lines across the state.
The bwregiobuses are designed as a high-quality alternative to motorized individual traffic in rural areas, focusing on climate protection in transportation. Cities and districts can choose to design their vehicles in the distinctive white-yellow-gray bwegt design when applying for the program.
The success of the Regiobus Lines can be attributed to the participation of numerous cities and districts since the program's inception in 2015. These municipalities have not only planned and implemented bus lines but have also committed to financing the high-quality level of the services. This collective effort has contributed to the expansion of the network, with the state providing around 30 million euros annually for new lines or extensions of existing funding.
The bwregiobuses connect cities and communities without rail connections, closing gaps in the rail network. They offer quality standards, including direct and quick travel, boarding and alighting aids, WLAN, and USB power outlets. Many of the modern and comfortable bwregiobus buses are on the road in the white-yellow-grey bwegt design.
The bwregiobuses are part of the public transport system in Baden-Württemberg and are integrated into the bwegt family. They work with regional railway companies and other partners to improve local and regional transport for passengers. The Regiobus Lines have been part of the bwegt Brand Family since 2019 and are now called bwregiobuses.
Passenger numbers have increased on almost all lines, with around 12 million passengers traveling with the bwregiobuses in the previous year. The Ministry of Transport has published fact sheets on the use, funding, and milestones of the Funding Program "Regiobus Lines". For inquiries, the Ministry has a Press Office and a Contact Form.
Recently, a new press release about Regiobus Lines for Baden-Württemberg was issued on December 28, 2024. The state continues to invest in the program, ensuring the bwregiobuses remain a reliable and sustainable solution for rural transportation in the region.
