Decision Made on Klützer Straße in Hohenschönhausen: New Primary School Site Announced

In the heart of Berlin, the land-owned housing association HOWOGE has taken on a significant project. They are set to construct a new elementary school on Kluetzter Straße, with the aim of alleviating the strain on schools in the growing neighbourhood of Neu-Hohenschoenhausen.

The new school, planned in serial timber construction, will boast a total of 432 places, catering to the increasing demand for school places in the city. The construction project will include a sports hall with two hall parts, providing ample space for physical education and extracurricular activities.

The decision to include the Kluetzter Straße site in the Berlin school construction offensive was confirmed by the Senate Department for Education, following the confirmation of an additional need. However, a concrete date for the start of construction has yet to be set.

The Berlin school construction offensive is a central instrument for permanently ensuring local schooling in growing neighbourhoods like Neu-Hohenschoenhausen. It also includes the renovation of existing schools to cover the increasing demand and reduce the backlog of renovations at many locations.

The situation at the elementary schools in Neu-Hohenschoenhausen is particularly tense, with many schools taking on significantly more children than originally planned. The addition of the new school is expected to bring noticeable relief to the overloaded schools in Hohenschoenhausen.

The city aims to implement the new building on Kluetzter Straße as soon as possible to ease the pressure on existing schools and continue to fulfil its educational mandate. The builder of the new serial wood construction planned for the new elementary school building on Kluetzter Straße in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen is the Bauer Group.

HOWOGE is relying on serial timber construction for the school, which uses standardized processes to reduce construction costs and complete projects more quickly. This method has already been used in schools within the Lichtenberg district, and the new school on Kluetzter Straße will expand the network of schools built using this principle.

The Lichtenberg district councilor for school and sports, Sandy Mattes (SPD), considers the inclusion of the Kluetzter Straße site in the school construction offensive as a great relief. The new elementary school is expected to not only create urgently needed capacity but also serve as an example of modern construction in the education sector.

Additional strain is expected from new housing construction projects, leading to a continued rise in the number of students. The district office aims to implement the new building on Kluetzter Straße as soon as possible to address this issue and continue to provide quality education to the growing community of Hohenschoenhausen.
