Delay in voting for Public and Recreation position opening
Guernsey's Policy and Resources Committee in Flux
A significant change is underway in Guernsey's Policy and Resources Committee (P&R) following the resignation of Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq. The resignation, which was accepted, came in the wake of serious charges against him.
Deputy Le Tocq tendered his resignation from P&R during a States meeting, creating a vacancy in the committee. The opportunity to elect a replacement member was available during the same meeting, but Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez requested that the election be deferred to the next States meeting, scheduled for a later date in September.
The Bailiff agreed to this deferment, allowing time for discussions regarding potential nominations to fill the vacant position. The identity of the deputy who might be elected is not yet determined, with a number of other deputies expressing an interest in working on P&R.
P&R usually consists of five members, each responsible for different work streams. With Deputy Le Tocq's departure, the committee will operate with four members for a few weeks. Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, Deputy Gavin St Pier, and Deputy Charles Parkinson continue in their roles.
Deputy Steve Falla has been covering Deputy Le Tocq's external relations work since his arrest. The P&R Committee lodged a motion to replace Deputy Le Tocq on P&R, but the discussions regarding this and the potential nominees are currently being held behind closed doors.
Deputy Le Tocq has not yet entered any pleas for the charges against him. He has been held in remand at Les Nicolles Prison and his next court appearance is scheduled for 15 September.
The P&R Committee, along with the rest of Guernsey's government, will continue to function amidst these changes, working to maintain the island's smooth operation and progress.
