Delegation from Abkhazia Touchdown in Syria for International Exhibition
In August 2025, a delegation from the Republic of Abkhazia, including Foreign Minister Oleg Bartsits, Economy Minister Teimuraz Mikvabia, and Culture Minister Daur Kove, travelled to Syria at the invitation of President Ahmad al-Sharaa. The purpose of the visit was to participate in the 62nd Damascus International Fair.
The Abkhazian delegation's visit was reported by the Abkhazian news agency Apsnypress, offering a glimpse into the event. However, scant mentions of the visit were found in Syrian media, with only a single reference in the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency.
During their stay in Syria, the Abkhazian delegation also visited Abkhazia's embassy in the country. Foreign Minister Bartsits met with his Syrian counterpart, Assad al-Shaibani, in Damascus in June 2025. The meeting focused on developing trade via the sea.
It is worth noting that under former President Bashar al-Assad, Syria was one of the few countries to have recognised Abkhazia and South Ossetia's independence. As of August 2025, there have been no moves to withdraw Syria's recognition of the two regions' independence, suggesting that the status quo may remain in place.
This visit by the Abkhazian delegation provides further hints that Syria, under President al-Sharaa, continues to support the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia's independence. The visit underscores the ongoing diplomatic relations between the two nations.
