Delving Deeper into solidarity: Examining the true nature of Allyship
In the latest episode of the Beyond the Pledge series, host Jai Tedeschi and Tony Effik, founder of Black and Brilliant, delve into the true meaning of being an ally to one's BIPOC colleagues.
The discussion highlights the importance of authenticity, standing up for culture, and bringing people's whole selves to work in increasing diversity and inclusion. Tony Effik emphasizes that BIPOC people are integral to this process, and seeing them as culture-adds, not culture fits, is crucial.
The conversation also covers workplace inclusion, touching upon the role of equity in advertising. Closing the wealth gap is essential for creating true diversity, and employing Black-owned startups and suppliers is a significant step in this direction.
Jai Tedeschi stresses the importance of creating a network for each other and helping one another to succeed as a vital component towards creating a more diverse industry. The discussion between the two also underscores the importance of data transparency.
In 2020, the topic of allyship, defined as a supportive association with another person or group, rose in prominence. Organizations such as the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) made commitments to address institutional racism in Germany, and campaigns like the German Karate Association's joint "Campaign against Racism: Proud for Germany" expressed allyship during Black History Month and beyond.
Brands and agencies have also made pledges to address systemic racism and express their continued allyship during and beyond Black History Month. However, Effik shares that the kind of ally most-needed is one that "if a Black person is not in the room, the Black person feels like you got their back."
The new episode of Beyond the Pledge series not only emphasizes the importance of embracing data transparency but also discusses workplace inclusion. By fostering authentic relationships, promoting equity, and closing the wealth gap, we can create a more diverse and inclusive industry.
