Democrats in the Bronx publicly support Zohran in their political movement
In a bid to rally support for the Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, a rally was held in the Bronx at Lou Gehrig Plaza. The event aimed to encourage party leaders who have yet to endorse Mamdani to join the bandwagon.
Attorney General Letitia James, who has been boosting Mamdani for months, spoke at the rally, urging the party to unite in support of the nominee. James stated, "Now is the time to address challenges from Washington D.C. and stand together with no space between us."
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams also attended the rally and urged the party to get behind Mamdani. Williams noted that he had inspired a substantial number of first-time voters to turn out. Sen. Jamaal Bailey emphasised Mamdani's love for the city.
Several speakers at the rally, including the Bronx Democratic Party, Sen. Jamaal Bailey, City Council Member Oswald Feliz, and others, endorsed Mamdani for the first time. Over the past two months, Mamdani has sought to broaden his political tent, distancing himself from aspects of the far-left platform of the Democratic Socialists of America.
Mayor Eric Adams, who has refrained from backing a candidate in the Democratic primary, also spoke in favour of Mamdani. However, it was reported that Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, who also refrained from backing a candidate in the primary, was unable to attend the rally due to a scheduling conflict, and it was unclear if she had confirmed her endorsement.
Despite Mamdani's loss in the Bronx during the Democratic primary, with former Gov. Andrew Cuomo winning over 53% of the votes there, Mamdani has rolled out endorsements from leaders across the political spectrum, including moderate former Mayor Eric Adams and Cuomo backers like Rep. Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn.
Conversations are ongoing between Mamdani and the moderate Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries, Kathy Hochul, and Chuck Schumer, but as of now, there is no publicly available information about any ongoing negotiations between the parties. It remains to be seen if these leaders will endorse Mamdani and lend their support to his campaign.
