Derby candidate Bockos officially withdrawn from race

In a disappointing turn of events, Bockos Diamond, the current BoyleSports Irish Derby champion and ante-post favourite, has been withdrawn from the third-round competition at Shelbourne Park. The injury, which involves a strained muscle, occurred on the gallops at home on Thursday.

Trainer Graham Holland informed Shelbourne's racing office of the unfortunate news, leading to Bockos Diamond's withdrawal from the Classic. The dog was due to compete in heat three, where he was set to race against Cheap Sandwiches and the UK star Proper Heiress.

Despite this setback, Graham Holland still has several dogs participating in the Irish Derby. Cheap Sandwiches, who finished as the 2024 runner-up, Bombay Pat (the fastest dog in both rounds so far), Rural Pest, and Faypoint Harvey are all still in the race.

Bockos Diamond's owners, Graham Box, Bev Lochead, Austin Whelan, and Thomas McNamara, are understandably gutted about the withdrawal but are hopeful for his future. Graham Box personally would like to see a few straws taken now to target the Winter Festival with Bockos Diamond in the future, but the syndicate hasn't had those discussions yet.

For those interested in greyhound racing, Betano offers markets for betting. New customers can receive £30 in free bets when they wager £10. However, it's important to remember that terms apply to the Betano offer and to always gamble responsibly.

As for the Irish Derby, the competition continues at Shelbourne Park this evening, with Graham Box, Bev Lochead, and the rest of the syndicate present to support Graham Holland's remaining runners. The injury sustained by Bockos Diamond is treatable, but he will not be participating in the Irish Derby this year.
