Churchill Downs Expands Horizons Beyond Q2 2025

Churchill Downs, the iconic racetrack known for hosting the Kentucky Derby, is looking beyond its traditional horizons with a strategic growth plan. CEO Bill Carstanjen has identified several key areas for potential growth, including the expansion and revamp of Casino Salem in New Hampshire, and the development of regional gaming hubs in New England.

Carstanjen views the acquisition and expansion of Casino Salem as a key part of Churchill Downs' (CDL) growth strategy. The aim is to transform Casino Salem into a state-of-the-art regional gaming and entertainment hub, tapping into the strategic location near downtown Boston and leveraging charitable gaming formats that have strong local support. The expansion plans include rebranding, increasing the gaming floor, and enhancing food and beverage offerings, aiming to boost local tourism and economic activity in the region.

In the world of horse racing, Carstanjen mentioned the existence of paths for European, Middle Eastern, and Japanese interests to enter horses in the Kentucky Derby as a way to solidify connections to those markets. He also anticipates increased viewership and wagering due to the prime-time coverage of the Kentucky Oaks.

The potential growth areas for CDL beyond Q2 2025 also include ticketing, broadcast rights, wagering, sponsorships, and renovation and expansion. Carstanjen is optimistic about the broadcast of the Kentucky Derby, with the extension of broadcast rights with NBC starting next year and prime-time coverage of the Kentucky Oaks in 2026. The enhanced visibility of the Kentucky Oaks is expected to strengthen its appeal to current and prospective sponsors.

However, Carstanjen did not provide specific details about Churchill's plans for Casino Salem in New Hampshire, stating he would have more to say when the deal is closed. He also did not express concern about prediction markets affecting CDL's parimutuel horse racing wagering, as they require approval from the content producer to conduct wagering activity on races.

In the second quarter of 2025, Churchill Downs generated a record revenue of $934.4 million, a 5% increase from the previous year. This growth is evident for CDL, according to Carstanjen, who emphasizes the importance of connecting with the correct sponsors for the Kentucky Derby, especially internationally.
