Arnstadt Detention Center Welcomes First Inmates

The detention center in Arnstadt, located in Erfurt, Thuringia, has recently begun accommodating foreign nationals awaiting deportation. This central project of the state government led by CDU, BSW, and SPD saw its first inmates arrive, as announced by the Ministry of Justice.

Currently, the detention center houses two individuals: a 23-year-old Tunisian man and a 22-year-old Albanian man. The Tunisian man was transferred to the detention center following a court order, while the circumstances surrounding the Albanian man's arrival remain unspecified.

The Tunisian man had gone into hiding in May to avoid deportation but was arrested for breaking the peace in Nordhausen last Sunday. Meanwhile, the Albanian man, who was supposed to be deported in April 2024, escaped from a police building and went into hiding.

Both men are incarcerated at the detention center until their deportation. The conditions for detention in the detention center are that there is a risk of flight or that the person poses a threat to public safety and order.

The detention center is expected to accommodate a total of ten people by the end of August. In the long term, up to 37 people could be accommodated in the detention center.

The detention center's opening has been met with criticism from the opposition Left party and refugee organizations. Despite this, the coalition of CDU, BSW, and SPD remains committed to the project.

In the future, individuals who are to be deported or whose deportation is pending will be housed in the central detention center in Erfurt, established as part of the state government project. This detention center will eventually replace the Arnstadt facility, accommodating a larger number of individuals.

The arrival of the first inmates at the detention center in Arnstadt marks a significant step in the implementation of the state government's immigration policies. As the number of inmates grows, the detention center will continue to play a crucial role in managing the cases of foreign nationals awaiting deportation.
