Former Evangelical Bishop Johannes Friedrich, known for his ecumenical work and bridge-building, has passed away in Nuremberg at the age of 77.

Born in Bielefeld in 1948, Friedrich's life and work were deeply rooted in the church. He began his ministry as a student pastor in Nuremberg, and later served as dean there from 1991 to 1999.

His tenure as dean marked a significant step in his career, leading to his election as bishop in 1999. He served in this role until 2011, during which time he was instrumental in the Ecumenical Church Congress held in Munich in 2010.

As bishop, Friedrich was a driving force for the Christian-Jewish dialogue and also engaged in dialogue with Muslim believers. He was a firm advocate for the church in the midst of the world, standing up for its values and beliefs.

Friedrich's personal relationship with God was a guiding force behind his work. Current Bishop Christian Kopp stated that Friedrich embodied the freedom granted by Christian faith in his work. After completing his twelve-year term as bishop, he continued to serve as a village pastor in Middle Franconia until his retirement.

Friedrich was also notably active as a founding member in the Johanniterorden (Order of St. John), including its associated organizations such as Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe (first aid), Johanniter-Hilfsgemeinschaften, Johanniter-Schwesternschaft, and Johanniter-Arbeitsgemeinschaften fΓΌr Gegenwartsfragen.

Friedrich's loving, attentive, and purposeful work was admired by many, including Kopp. His death occurred on Wednesday, surrounded by his family. No further information about the cause of death or funeral arrangements was provided in the article.

Friedrich's legacy will continue to be felt in the church and beyond, as he leaves behind a legacy of ecumenical work, dedication, and service.
