Alibaba's DingTalk aims to expand globally as the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) market experiences a downturn

DingTalk, Alibaba's communication platform, aims to expand its operations internationally as the SaaS market experiences a decline.

The Chinese software-as-a-service (SaaS) market remains relatively small, with intense competition in the collaboration software sector leading to a saturation of the domestic market. After years of competition, the core enterprises willing to pay for these services have been covered, with few new demands emerging.

However, DingTalk's international expansion is a natural step in the evolution of the Chinese enterprise service market. The overseas SaaS market is crowded with giants, such as Microsoft (Teams), Salesforce's Slack, and Zoom, who have captured most of the market share.

Despite having the backing of large companies, standing out in a market dominated by giants remains a significant challenge for Chinese collaborative office software like DingTalk. This is particularly true in terms of localized operations and overseas branding.

To overcome these challenges, DingTalk has designated China, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines for filling regional manager and solution manager positions in collaboration with ecosystem partners. This move confirms the trend towards international expansion in the Chinese SaaS market.

DingTalk's international strategy prioritizes meeting the collaborative management needs of Chinese companies overseas, especially in industries like photovoltaics, lithium batteries, and electric vehicles. To facilitate cross-border payments, DingTalk has partnered with cross-border payment service provider Lianlian DigiTech.

Since 2021, Chinese SaaS companies have accelerated their international expansion efforts, seeking growth in markets like Europe, the Americas, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Given the slowdown in growth of the Chinese SaaS market, international expansion is one of the few clear paths forward.

To establish an international service ecosystem, DingTalk has partnered with ecosystem partners. The DingTalk open platform offers applications in fields such as market and category positioning, customer management, cross-border payments, network security, and human resource management.

As DingTalk embarks on this new chapter, it faces a competitive landscape but also presents an opportunity to cater to the growing needs of Chinese companies expanding overseas. The success of DingTalk's international expansion will be closely watched in the industry.
