"Disappointing Performance": Zverev encounters another setback at the Grand Slam tournament

German tennis star Alexander Zverev's aspirations for the US Open title remain unrealized, as he was knocked out in the third round. His defeat was attributed to familiar errors, physical discomfort from back pain, and a mishit net roll.

"Disappointing Performance": Zverev encounters another setback at the Grand Slam tournament

In a disappointing turn of events, Alexander Zverev's quest for a Grand Slam title at the US Open has come to an end. The world number three was eliminated in the third round by Felix Auger-Aliassime, bringing an end to his dream of winning his first major title.

Zverev's draw until the potential semifinal against Sinner was no longer valid, as he succumbed to Auger-Aliassime with a score of 6:4, 6:7 (7:9), 4:6, 4:6. The match lasted a grueling 3 hours and 48 minutes, ending in defeat for the German powerhouse.

The turning point of the match came in the second set tiebreak, where Zverev had a set point but failed to convert it. Auger-Aliassime capitalised on a net cord to take the set and gain the momentum. Zverev struggled with a lack of feel in his forehand and backhand during the match, which proved costly in the crucial moments.

Zverev attributed his loss to poor play and stated that he didn't play a good tournament overall. He has not won a Grand Slam title, with his closest being five years ago in New York where he lost two points from victory. This year's US Open did not change that, as his dream of a Grand Slam title once again remained elusive.

Zverev's only real highlight this year was reaching the final at the Australian Open. However, his performance at the US Open did not meet the expectations he set a week ago when he expressed confidence in wanting to win the title.

Despite the setback, Zverev's next tournament will be the Laver Cup from September 19 to 21. His current coaching situation remains unchanged, with his family teamβ€”his father Alexander Sr. and brother Mischaβ€”as his main coaches, and temporary advice from Toni Nadal.

Zverev's year has been labeled as "terrible" by himself, and the US Open did not change that. His dream of a Grand Slam title will have to wait for another day.
