Disastrous weather in Mallorca leaves havoc in its wake
In the heart of the Mediterranean, the Balearic Islands were hit by a severe storm on Tuesday, causing chaos and disruption across the region. By 6:00 PM, emergency services reported around 80 incidents, with Mallorca being the most affected island.
The storm brought heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding, causing significant damage in Mallorca's capital, Palma, and the nearby town of CalviΓ . The second-highest warning level, orange, remains in effect for Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands until 7:00 AM on Wednesday.
The storm's wrath was particularly evident at Son Sant Joan Airport in Palma, where 41 flight cancellations, nine diversions, and numerous delays were reported. The airport, which schedules a total of 906 flights for a typical Tuesday, was left reeling from the storm's impact.
The incidents were mainly due to flooded streets and basements, as well as fallen trees. Along the seaside promenade in Palma, several trees were uprooted due to the strong winds. In CalviΓ , located in the southwest of the island, 18 incidents were reported, adding to the overall chaos.
The Spanish meteorological agency, Aemet, issued the order to issue the second-highest alert level for the weather storm on Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands. Storm gusts exceeded 90 kilometers per hour in certain areas, contributing to the destruction caused by the storm.
The forecast for Tuesday included up to 50 liters of rain per square meter, a stark reminder of the storm's intensity. However, by late afternoon, the situation in Mallorca had improved significantly, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.
