Kojima, 75, came in second among the 10 candidates who won seats in the town election. In a local TV network interview on Monday, he stated that his election proves residents trust him. However, the election has sparked anger and shock online, with some criticising the voters for not considering Kojima's past allegations.
Last year, Kojima resigned from his position as mayor due to 99 sexual harassment allegations. An official investigation accused him of incidents of harassment, including touching a colleague's breasts and buttocks.
The criticism towards Kojima's election implies a concern for the employees who were sexually harassed during his tenure as mayor. One online user criticised the voters for not caring about these employees, stating that the election results reflect a divide in opinions regarding Kojima's suitability for the role.
Kojima warned against mentioning the sexual harassment claims again during the interview. He did not address the allegations directly.
