In the German automotive market, electric vehicles (EVs) are making significant strides, thanks in part to falling prices and rising discounts. According to recent data, Volkswagen currently offers the largest average discount on their electric models, with discount levels for EVs and combustion engines roughly equal at around 17 percent. This trend is contributing to Volkswagen's dominance in the German electric car market.

One of the standout discounts can be found on the Opel Corsa Electric GS, which is now available for more than a quarter (26.5%) off the list price, bringing the final price down to 23,435 euros. Similarly, Audi's Q4 e-tron 45 e-tron is now offered with an average discount of 22.5 percent, making the model almost 12,000 euros cheaper.

The Skoda Enyaq, currently the most popular electric car in the VW group, is also heavily discounted. The average discount for the coupé version 60 is 18.1 percent, reducing the average transaction price from 48,900 to 40,049 euros.

Other manufacturers are also bringing more affordable electric cars to the market. For example, Skoda's upcoming Elroq and Hyundai's Inster are expected to offer competitive pricing. Kia's new EV3 is on average 27.7 percent cheaper, with an average transaction price of 26,011 euros, which is a significant drop from the list price.

The price difference between new electric cars and conventional cars in Germany has also decreased significantly. What was once a gap of 7,641 euros at the beginning of 2024 is now just 2,862 euros.

The growing oversupply, consumer hesitation, and political pressure in the form of stricter EU fleet limits are all factors contributing to the increasing popularity of electric cars. Dealers are under pressure to reach certain E-car quotas, or else they face massive losses due to missing bonuses, according to ZDK President Thomas Peckruhn.

Discounts on electric cars come partly from the manufacturer, partly from dealers or specialized portals. The entry price for the BMW i4 drops by over 14,000 euros to around 43,624 euros, while the BMW i5 has an average discount of 26.2 percent, resulting in a price advantage of over 18,000 euros.

Ferdinand DudenhΓΆffer from CAR states that the electric car is making its way, although it takes time for the development to be steady. He attributes the discounts to a low order backlog and a poor economy. Market observers see this development as a lasting trend, with electric cars becoming more common.
