Discourse Focus on Ukraine's Security Assurances to Dominate Upcoming Summit, Says Estonian Prime Minister
Estonia Pushes for Stronger Security Guarantees for Ukraine
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal has reiterated Estonia's commitment to supporting Ukraine's security and potential membership in both the European Union (EU) and NATO. In a series of statements made during a press release on Sunday, Michal emphasized the need for Europe to take a proactive role in these matters.
Michal stated that Estonia has made a specific contribution to the coalition of the willing, a group of countries focused on providing security guarantees for Ukraine. The coalition's meeting, which included Estonian Prime Minister Michal and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, took place before their scheduled meeting with US President Donald Trump and several European leaders in Washington on Monday.
The focus of the coalition meeting was on the situation in Ukraine and the need for strong and credible security guarantees. Michal believes that these guarantees should be as close as possible to Article 5 of NATO, which provides for collective defence.
Michal also emphasized the necessity of reaching an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine. She stressed that Ukraine cannot conduct negotiations under bombardment. After the video meeting, she stated that "no one trusts Putin."
President Trump has confirmed the United States' readiness to contribute to Ukraine's security guarantees. The leadership in the coalition of the willing for these guarantees is taken by France and the United Kingdom, as co-chairs of this coalition primarily composed of European countries. Although the USA remains supportive, it does not intend to send ground troops.
Michal's statements continue to focus on strengthening Ukraine's security. She believes that Ukraine's future in the EU and NATO is the best long-term guarantee for Ukraine. She emphasized that Europe must take the lead in providing security guarantees to Ukraine.
On Monday, Michal, Zelensky, Trump, and several European leaders will meet in Washington to discuss these issues further. The main topic for the meeting will be providing Ukraine with strong and credible security guarantees.
In conclusion, Estonia, under the leadership of Prime Minister Kristen Michal, is actively pushing for stronger security guarantees for Ukraine, particularly in the context of potential EU and NATO membership. This stance aligns with the focus of the coalition of the willing and reflects a continued emphasis on pressure on the aggressor (Russia).
