In the heart of Princeton University, a student's academic journey takes an intriguing turn. Vidushi Sharma, our Humanities Correspondent, delves into the story of this student who sought an interdisciplinary path, combining the realms of science and humanities.
Last year, the student found themselves uncertain about their academic path at Princeton. They had considered alternatives like computer science and economics, but the desire for interdisciplinary flexibility lingered. The student's interests leaned towards cognitive science, a field that explores the workings of the mind from a scientific perspective.
In their quest for a suitable academic home, the student discovered the Philosophy department at Princeton. It seemed to align perfectly with their interests. Today, the student, now a motivated prospective Philosophy major, is working in Professor Norman's Computational Memory lab.
The student's journey didn't end with Princeton's boundaries. Intrigued by the interdisciplinary nature of cognitive science, they researched Stanford's Symbolic Systems program, which focuses on the intersection of computers and minds. To gain insights, they emailed a graduate student in Professor Ken Norman's neuroscience lab at Princeton, who had studied Symbolic Systems at Stanford.
The advice they received from Professor Norman and the student was invaluable. It guided them in navigating their academic goals, providing a roadmap for their interdisciplinary journey.
This summer, the student is immersed in research at Princeton, a testament to their commitment to bridging the gap between science and humanities. The Centre for Digital Humanities, under the guidance of Associate Director Jean Bauer, is a hub for this interdisciplinary exploration.
As the summer unfolds, the student continues to learn, grow, and delve deeper into the fascinating world of cognitive science. Their story serves as a beacon for those seeking interdisciplinary paths, demonstrating that with determination and the right guidance, one can navigate the complex landscape of academia.
