In the quiet, rural area of County Down, Michael Hutchinson, a multiple national champion on the bike and award-winning author, spends his weeks contributing to Cycling Weekly (CW) every week.
Hutchinson's daily life is filled with unexpected encounters and conversations, one of which is with Mrs. Doc, a local resident known for her brief, yet meaningful exchanges post-run or ride.
Recently, Hutchinson embarked on a ride that led him to the lighthouse. When asked by his father if there were any tourists at the lighthouse, Hutchinson responded in the negative, a white lie that seemed to surprise his father, who is a keen birdwatcher and often seeks out tourist spots.
The area being thinly populated, Hutchinson finds it challenging to identify tourists by sight. His father, however, is not convinced and frequently inquires about the destination of his rides and if he encountered any tourists during his journeys.
On this particular ride, Hutchinson mentioned the improvement in a rough road and the filling of a big pothole, which brought a sense of satisfaction. He also shared an unusual experience of drafting a tractor for two miles, with the driver expressing approval of his helmet.
Post-ride, Hutchinson would often find himself engaged in conversations with Mrs. Doc, who is currently training for an ultra-marathon. These exchanges, though brief, provide a sense of camaraderie and shared understanding.
Hutchinson's father, however, often expresses disbelief at Hutchinson's seemingly aimless rides around the countryside. When asked about his day, Hutchinson would simply respond, "It was fine, thank you."
Despite the occasional questioning and disbelief, Hutchinson continues to enjoy his rides, finding joy in the simple pleasures of the countryside and the companionship of Mrs. Doc.
