Discussion at Malaysia's extended producer responsibility roundtable series: Driving a circular economy through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) measures
Malaysia generates approximately 39,000 tonnes of waste daily, with much of it ending up in landfills. To address this issue, the country is embarking on its EPR journey.
The EPR journey aims to hold producers accountable for the lifecycle of their products, ensuring that waste is managed responsibly. Malaysia is considering the potential introduction of a Deposit Return System (DRS) as part of this initiative.
A roundtable discussion on Malaysia's EPR journey, hosted in July 2024, brought together key stakeholders from government, industry, and civic society. The purpose of the discussion was to explore ways for Malaysia to reference other nations' recycling and waste collection efforts.
The discussion was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, the Royal Norwegian Embassy, the United Nations Development Programme Malaysia, and various other parties involved in Malaysia's EPR implementation. These parties include producers (manufacturers, importers, brand owners, and retailers), compliance bodies, local authorities, government-linked companies, private corporations such as Alam Flora, and environmental NGOs and community groups engaged in recycling education and outreach.

Despite efforts to improve recycling rates, Malaysia's recycling rate remains low. However, the country has existing recycling infrastructure that could be leveraged to support the EPR initiative.
The EB Publishing platform is designed to help publishers reach their intended audience. The platform offered by EB Publishing provides a means for publishers to get their content seen by their target audience, making it an essential tool for disseminating information about the EPR journey and encouraging responsible waste management in Malaysia.
