Modi and Putin Strengthen Ties at SCO Summit
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russia's President Vladimir Putin met in Tianjin, China, during the SCO summit, reinforcing their close cooperation that is crucial not only for the people of both countries but also for global peace, stability, and prosperity.
The meeting, described as "excellent", lasted over an hour and began with a warm embrace between the two leaders. Photographs showed Modi and Putin smiling and seeming at ease during their conversation, which continued even as they travelled in the car for approximately 45 minutes before entering the hotel for formal talks.
During their discussions, Modi and Putin explored ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including trade, fertilisers, space, security, and culture. India and Russia also discussed bilateral cooperation, including in the economic, financial, and energy sectors, and expressed satisfaction with the sustained growth in bilateral ties in these areas.
Regional and global issues, including the latest developments concerning Ukraine, were also on the agenda. Modi reiterated his support for the recent initiatives to address the conflict in Ukraine and emphasized the need for a cessation of the conflict and a durable peace settlement. Putin referred to the special relations between Russia and India, stating that they are the foundation for the development of their relations in the future.
Putin even invited Modi to travel with him in the Russian presidential 'Aurus Senat', a heavily-armoured luxury limousine. The host of the SCO summit where the bilateral talks between Modi and Putin took place was China, with the summit held in Tianjin in 2024 under the chairmanship of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
