Discussion between the Presidency and Puigdemont regarding the direction of the legislative term, held in Brussels
Junts, a prominent independentist group in Spain, held a significant meeting on Wednesday in Waterloo, Belgium. The gathering was attended by key figures such as Jordi Turull, the secretary general of Junts, Eduard Pujol, the spokesperson in the Senate, and Miriam Nogueras, the leader in Congress.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the degree of compliance with the Brussels Agreement of 2023, which Junts agreed to as part of the investiture of Pedro Sánchez. The meeting also served as an opportunity to analyze the meeting held the previous day between President Salvador Illa and Carles Puigdemont, the former President of the Generalitat and leader of Junts, in Brussels.
During the meeting, the strategy of the independentist group was marked for both Congress and the Parliament. No significant agreements were adopted, but the next steps regarding the General State Budget (PGE) were discussed. Junts stated they will not negotiate unless the "debt" accumulated by Catalonia is recognized in the form of budgetary items from previous years that were not executed.
The meeting was held prior to the National Executive Board, and Toni Castellà, the vice-president of Junts and deputy in the Parliament, Albert Batet, the leader of the group in the Parliament, and Josep Rull, the President of the Parliament, were all in attendance. Mònica Sales, the spokesperson in the Parliament, and Josep Rius, the spokesperson of the formation, also participated.
On Friday, September 15, 2023, or Saturday, September 16, 2023, in Belgium, Carles Puigdemont himself or his representatives will extend an invitation to the deputies of Junts for a meeting personally presided over and led by Carles Puigdemont. The meeting is crucial as it will allow Puigdemont to preside and lead the meetings in person, with deputies in the autonomous chamber summoned for September 15 and 16, also in Belgium.
The independentist group, Junts, positions itself as an alternative to the "process of denationalization" and impoverishment of the country. The group aims to provide a voice for those who seek a different path for Catalonia. The meeting in Belgium marks a significant step in this ongoing journey.
