Disruption to train services anticipated in Switzerland this fall
Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has announced several rail service interruptions across Switzerland and Italy due to various construction projects. Here's a breakdown of the disruptions and the alternative transport arrangements.
In Vaud, passengers can expect rail service interruptions between Lausanne and Puidoux from September 5th to 8th, and from November 28th to December 1st, 2025. During these periods, buses will substitute trains on this line. Passengers are advised to consult the timetable online or in the SBB Mobile app before their departure.
From October 10th-13th, buses will substitute trains on the line between Visp and Brig (Valais) due to the replacement of two railway bridges over the Saltina River and work on protective walls.
In the same region, regional train traffic will be replaced by buses between Lausanne and Cully on September 13th-15th. Long-distance and regional trains will also be replaced by buses between Lausanne and Palézieux (IR15) and between Lausanne and Fribourg (IC1).
The work involves the renewal of safety installations and structures between La Conversion (Lutry) and Puidoux. For each construction project, a replacement system is put in place to ensure a high-quality transport chain, according to the SBB.
In a separate announcement, the SBB has revealed that EuroCity trains between Domodossola and Milan will be cancelled between August 30th and September 13th, 2025. During this period, replacement buses will run between Geneva, Martigny, and Milan, as well as between Domodossola and Milan, in Italy.
From October to December 2025, various weekends of total interruptions are still expected on the line between Domodossola and Milan, with replacement buses provided.
IR90/95 trains will be diverted via Palézieux (journey time extended by approximately 30 minutes) on September 13th-15th. For long-distance journeys on the east-west axis, passengers are advised to use the Pied du Jura line (via the IC5 connections).
Trains will be replaced by buses between Villeneuve and Vevey (Vaud) due to aqueduct maintenance work on November 8th-9th. Additionally, trains between Payerne (Vaud) and Murten (Fribourg) will be replaced for the repair of level crossings and preparatory work related to the replacement of a railway bridge from August 29th-September 1st and September 19th-22nd.
For those travelling between La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle (Neuchâtel), passengers will use line R20 during the scheduled connection of a railway bridge at Col-des-Roches on September 6th-7th. They will then take a replacement bus to Le Locle-Col-des-Roches.
The SBB encourages passengers to plan their journeys in advance and to check the timetable regularly for updates. With these disruptions, the SBB aims to improve the safety and efficiency of their rail services in the long run.
