Dixie Heights competing track teams clinch dominant victories, securing region championship titles in Class 5A.
In a thrilling conclusion to the Class 3A, Region 5 track and field meet held in May 2023, Dixie Heights emerged as the dominant force, securing victories in both the boys' and girls' competitions.
The Dixie Heights boys clinched the title with an impressive total of 134.5 points, comfortably ahead of Cooper in second place with 85 points. The Ryle boys completed the podium in third place with 84 points.
The Dixie Heights girls also put on a stellar performance, amassing 106 points to secure their victory. Campbell County finished a close second with 99 points, while Notre Dame claimed third place with 95 points.
Individual performances were nothing short of spectacular. Nathan Verax, a member of Ryle's state runner-up football team last fall, added to his trophy cabinet with gold medals in the 100 dash, 4x200 relay, and 4x100 relay.
Meanwhile, Olivia Holbrook, a senior from Campbell County, shone brightly, winning four gold medals in the meet. Her victories were spread across the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, long jump, and triple jump.
Ari Carter, a sophomore from Dixie Heights, added to the team's success with a win in the discus, while Carson Hehman, another Dixie Heights athlete, claimed victory in the shot put.
Brennan Simpson, also a member of the Dixie Heights team, won the 400 dash, and Emily Bruns, a senior from the same school, triumphed in the 300-meter hurdles.
Notable performances came from outside the winning teams too. Grant County senior Lincoln Herald finished second to Van Laningham in the 1600 run, and Simon Kenton senior Brayden Polly won the long jump, triple jump, and high jump.
Olivia Haswell, a junior from Cooper, excelled in the sprint relays, winning the 4×100 and 4×200 events and adding a gold medal in the 400 dash to her collection. Cooper junior Paul Van Laningham clinched victory in the 1600 run.
